When Friends and Family Ask You to Work for Free
Hello and welcome to Ditching Hourly. I'm Jonathan Stark. Today I've got an audio excerpt from an answer I provided on my YouTube channel. You can check it out at thejonathonstarkshow.com and it'll redirect you to YouTube if you're into watching videos. Otherwise, you can just listen to the audio here on the podcast. Enjoy. Hey, Jonathan here. SNRI asks, how do you politely yet firmly refuse to work for relatives who don't necessarily know how many hours they're asking out of you and expect you to do it free of charge? I feel like many creatives encounter this situation at least a couple times in their careers. I mean, you kind of answered your own question a little bit. You just politely and firmly refuse to do it. But you don't want to leave them high and dry. They're your relatives. You do want to help them out somehow. So I would give them some kind of alternative, some sort of option. You can go to 99designs or you can go to Fiverr. I'll even help you find someone who can do this for you because I can't charge you for this and I can't do it for free, so I won't be able to do it. But here are some options for you. Here are some alternatives. I definitely want to help you out, but it needs to be in some less time-intensive way. So it depends so much on the specifics of the relationship and the culture of your country or family or region or whatever. I mean, there's a million variables here, but polite but firm. If I was ever going to get a tattoo, that might be it. Polite but firm. That's the way you need to be with clients too. So practicing on your relatives is probably a good place to start. I have been in this situation and it does not end well. So I wish I could give you word choice, but you just have to work it out on your own. But yeah, just say no. All right. I'm Jonathan Stark. I hope that helped. If you have a question for me, you can hashtag AskJonathan on YouTube, LinkedIn, or Twitter and we'll add it to the queue and I'll answer it as soon as I can. See ya.
